Gmail message notification sound - does this setting even exist?

The gmail app doesn't seem to have any settings where I can have it make a sonud whenever I receive mail. Is it possible to get this option? The native app on my SGSII has it but I don't like how I have to set it to fetch email every 5 minutes or so rather than gmail just automatically doing it.
thanks in advance.

You can't set polling intervals with the gmail app. It's push. If you establish polling intervals you're setting it up as pull (which wastes battery).

Notification settings are found on my device by accessing the menu, selecting More, selecting Settings, selecting my account under Account Settings and by scrolling down to notification settings. I have to choose Labels to notify to adjust the notification tone (and notifications have to be enabled).

Thanks for this!

Also under those notifications settings, do you know what the "Notify Once" checkbox does? If I uncheck it, will I not be notified if email "threads" get new messages?

Depends on what u have for the notifications question. Since the recent 2.3.5 update, notifications are a little trickier to find on my device (Incredible)...more, settings, press on email address, labels to notify (note I specified priority inbox which is a new feature for me).

Anyway, the checkbox is to receive a notification upon receipt of first email. If you don't wake the phone to interrogate, new emails won't include a separate notification. I figure i might miss an alert so I don't check said box. I like to be notified for each new message. User preference.
