Gmail not autosyncing

Hi ,
I just got a Desire S with Gingerbread. I love it. BUT - Gmail won't autosync! I have backgroud data on and autosync is checked. Why won't the messages just push to my Gmail? If I go into Gmail and press 'refresh' they show up, but I want to be notified when I get a message. Please help!

Have you enabled "notifications in the status bar when new email arrives"? via the app settings?
 
Hmm.. in that case it should be working. I don't use the notifications but it automatically pushes my emails to the app as soon as they hit the server. Hopefully Harry2 or El President (fonts of all knowledge :D) will be along later and will be able to help.
 
hey thanks so much. a friend suggested i clear everything under google services and that seems to have worked. although i did have a moment of panic when gtalk seemed to not work properly. 5 minutes later it did though and now all seems ok...
