Gmail Not Updating

I just updated my phone (Samsung Nexus S) to android version: 4.0.4 and in the process updated my gmail app, however now none of my mail is updating automatically or manually. I've tried everything i can think of but nothing seems to be working. Please Help.

Check in Settings => Accounts & Sync

Make sure everything is check marked and sync is good to go.

Also, is your wireless signal indicator white/grey or colored?
 
is it necessary to have everything checked, at the moment i only have gmail checked as i don't want everything else synced as well.

By wireless indicator do you mean the 3G bit, cause that is grey.

Yup that's your problem. Try singing into google talk.

ok i'm kind of new to this, but what will i achieve by signing into google talk, because my mail still won't sync will it?

and also was my problem not syncing everything or the 3G bit being grey?

Sign into google talk and it will sync.
