gmail notifications

On my Optimus V I have been using K9 mail for a few weeks and very much like it.
I have it "fetching" my gmail every 5 minutes and it duly notifies me when something new is in.
That's not the problem. A few minutes after I get the notification from K9 I then get a sound notification and a small graphic on my notification bar from GMail.
I already have GMail set so that under my account settings it is not checked that I want Email notifications.
So I think I'm telling GMail to not notify me but it does so anyway.

Any ideas how to keep GMail from giving me these duplicate notifications?

I had a problem similar to this, i had to disable notifications in the Gmail app, and the built in email client. Hopefully that helps, if not, i'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be around to help soon.
