gmail notifications

Since getting the s3 a few weeks ago i've been switching between the gmail app and the standard mailbox app for my email needs. I have notifications on for gmail but im not receiving any. I have to go into the app and hit the refresh button for it to update. Any idea whats going on here? Awesome phone btw and i feel like ive barely scratched the surface.

i should've said that it worked at one time, but stopped suddenly. I have easy battery saver installed, could that be affecting it?

That battery saver app is probably disabling sync, hence your need to manually check for email.
