Gmail push email broken.. anyone else?

Hey spiffyjiff, I'm a total noob too! Been a huge learning curve for me coming from a Razr, though I also used a Dell x50 pocket pc. That's the great thing about this forum - sharing the tips and tricks we have learned. A lot of great, knowledgeable people here that I've learned from.

Try this:

On any main screen, select that little 'up' arrow on the bottom left - this will bring up 'all programs'. Select 'Gmail notifier'. Then select 'settings'. Make sure 'Visible notifications' (Replaces Gmail notification in status bar) is checked. Also, for 'Notification icon' I have Android 2.0 selected. This setting chooses what you want the icon to look like in the status bar. I don't think any of this is necessary but try it anyway - it's the way I have mine configured.
Within this setting menu, you can also choose what ringtone, vibration mode or LED mode you wish to be notified with.

As far as Gmail and IMAP being push mail, IMAP certainly is - not 100% sure on Gmail. Can anyone else can answer this one?

Edit: Sorry, I was incorrect. 'Technically', IMAP is NOT Push mail.

EgeBamyasi: How long is it taking you to receive email? How delayed is it?

Just recieved email notification of your response on the Hero at 11:35am CT (my time) - time stamp on your post: 11:30 am CT.

Five minutes.

Again, edit ( I do this alot!): I should mention that this is first going to my main email provider, then fetched by my Gmail account and pushed to the Hero.

I just came inside from shoveling the driveway. Email I got over 30 mins ago in my inbox (via checking on the computer) and still no notification on the Hero.

EgeBamyasi, i dont have "gmail notifier" under programs, just the regular "gmail" which opens the app. ??

Are you sure you downloaded it? Try grabbing it again from the market. When you do, there will be a button that will say Uninstall if you already have it installed.
Another way you can check is to:
select the '+' button (bottom right of home screen)
select Shortcut
scroll to the bottom and select 'Program'
and then scroll until you see 'Gmail notifier'. If it's not there, it's probably not installed.
At this point DO NOT select it - you don't want to add the shortcut to your home screen which will happen if you select it - just back out instead. This is just a way to see if it's actually installed.

EgeBamyasi, ahhhhh, i think i know the prob. i didnt download "gmail notifier"...i have "gmail unread count" which i thought was the same thing. it looks like notifier does the same PLUS some other features. is this correct?

You live in the snow belt too, huh?:(

Yeah, that's pretty screwed up. On your computer, go to your Gmail settings.
First off, when going to Google/Gmail does the web address in your address bar say https or http? If it says https, remove https and put the same address but with http instead. You'll probably have to log in again as a result. This is what you want to be using from now on. Some screw up w/ Google security - there's a thread somewhere on the forum here about it.
Once you've done that, on your computer go into settings on your Gmail account and select the 'General' tab. At the bottom where it says Browser Connection, select 'Don't always use https'. Click Save Changes.

Kind of shooting in the dark here - trying to cover all the possibilities. This Gmail thing really is pretty high maintenance at first.

Correct! It's different. All these apps working with one another gets really confusing! Hope this works now. Let us know if you succeed!

Should also add that if you have a lot of emails in your email inbox, are using POP3, and having Gmail fetch, you may want to clean out your inbox. This was the one other step I did a couple of weeks ago. I had something like 13,000+ emails (seriously!) in my inbox. Took some time to go through it all but was well worth it.

I found this great article/primer that you should read if you are new to this whole IMAP/Push/POP thing. About three years old now, pertains to Yahoo, but still good info:

bynkii.com: POP, IMAP, and Yahoo Push Email, a primer

Unfortunately, that option is disabled for my domain by the school administrators:
Code:
Browser connection:
x Always use https
Don't always use https (option disabled for your domain)

That sucks. I guess maybe try it 'using https', but make sure you access the Gmail site w/ http address to change your settings as should be done from now on anyway. Not sure if it will make any difference but it must somehow since Google is recommending this themselves.
Maybe that might work. I hope you get it working...

I think I figured out what the problem is.

I got an email today and got a notification from Gmail Notifier. The thing that was odd about it was my Gmail filtering rules didn't classify it, so it was dumped into my regular inbox and not into a sorted folder.

So it seems that if you have rules that do the following:

Matches: to:(yourname@email.com)
Do this: Skip Inbox, Apply label "Personal"

Then for whatever reason, you don't get a notification for it.
