Help Gmail push only works when the phone is on?

Gmail pushes almost instantly. But this only seems to work when the phone is in use. Is this normal; I just switched over from the Storm 2.

Under Menu -> Settings -> Accounts & Sync -> make sure background data and auto sync are both checked.

Thankyou for the reply. I have those both checked, but i only seem to get notifications if the phone is not in sleep mode
