Gmail through browser

I've been using gmail thru my browser lately (xscope), and liking it better than k9. I've used k9 for more than a year, but it has never really treated deleted emails correctly. Using the browser, it mirrors my PC use. Is there an app that gives gmail notifications if browser is off? I get them with k9, but would like to uninstall it.

Not possible. You've gotta get notifications from one email client or another. If you want to uninstall K9 you could receive notifications via the Gmail app but use the browser to deal with it.

The only way I can think around this if you find an extension for Firefox or Chrome that could help.

@tcat007, I tried k9 but couldn't get on with it, only kept it a couple of days. The combination of gmail app and browser - I'm using the stock browser on my Desire S - works very well for me. Gmail app gives me notification of mail which I deal with through the browser. Whether I delete or archive, the gmail app auto syncs and the mail is deleted from the gmail app and notification is removed.

So the gmail app is used just for notification, although I sometimes have a quick scan of the inbox before launching the browser.:)

OP, pardon my being nosy, but why not simply use the Gmail app? What benefit do you see to using your browser instead?

I just don't like the app. The browser version has better UI (IMO); you can't pinch-zoom in the app and often the text is too small (in Xscope you can adjust text size with a quick finger gesture, and it auto-wraps); the layout of "folders" looks better in a browser (and 1 click less to get to folders)...

I still haven't got Gmail notifications figured out. K9 would alert me as soon as an email hit. I uninstalled K9 and turned on notifications in Gmail, and I'm getting no alerts. It's not a big deal, since I have a gmail bookmark on my screen that I just check mail with when I want. The unread number on the icon of Gmail would be nice to see though.

That's cool OP, just curious. :)

Per chance, did you disable the Gmail account from syncing, while using K9?

I've never had "auto-sync" checked, didn't think Gmail needed it checked (since K9 didn't). I did notice I didn't have GO Notifications for Gmail checked, now the unread number pops up on the icon, but I'm still not getting a ringtone. I do have the ringtone and notifications set in Gmail. So I take it Gmail doesn't go out and poll like K9 does with auto-sync off. I just don't like auto-sync on since I don't really need Calendar, Contacts, and Docs synced all the time (battery drain).
