Gmail vs. Email Notification

Just got my S3 yesterday, and cooing over it all morning. This is my first android phone (5 years of ios), and I am already totally lost, so expect many dumb questions.

First one!

There appears to be a default Email client (with a red wax @ seal) on the bottom right, as well as the Gmail client. Gmail is my primary email, and the only one I want notifications from. When I set up notifications, the default email client is the one that displays, not the gmail client (e.g., an envelope with an @ symbol appears on the status bar rather than the M envelope). Any way to change this?
 
I only use the GMail one. When you first powered on your device, it would have asked you to setup your Google account. You did so, right?

Doing so will configure Google, and thus GMail email. All mail should show via the GMail icon. Simply move the icon to the launcher, and thus move\delete the exchange email icon (the one with the red seal).

to set up the gmail notifications go in the gmail app and press menu. All the sounds and vibration can be configured from there. :)
 
Next Question.......How do I get the gmail app to show the little red dot with number of emails like my corp email account that is in the general email app?
 
I use Gmail and have been trying to set the notification but it just won't play it. I know I'm doing it right as I had it set on my x10i.all help welcome

just checked because I wasn't 100% sure but I can't uninstall the Gmail only getting the option to uninstall updates
 
arkangeluk, while in the GMail app, press Menu \ Settings \ Select your account \ Ringtones & Vibrate...

See what you have set there.

Next :)
 
everything like it was before. ringtone set to a tune, vibrate always and notify once for new email. also i cant seem to set my inbox as default. new mail goes to all mail, not inbox

is there any advantage of using the Gmail app vs the stock email client?

id like to see the numbers to know how many emails I have and will the Gmail app run int he background or do I have to configure it or open it before it checks for email?
 
I think with the GMail app you get options for labels and the likes. Not sure if the default (Exchange) setup offers that....
With the GMail app it will deliver the email virtually instantly, i.e. you don't have to open the app for it to check for emails.
 
is there any way to add non google email accounts to the gmail app? I use lots of different email addresses for work, play etc and am currently having to use the stock email app as it copes with all of them but email receipt for my gmail accounts is then slow.

What I do is forward all of my emails to GMail and use labels to sort them in there.
 
I have to say I just switched back to the stock app from the Gmail one and i quite like it. It does not gives me push but that saves on data use and battery

Just the opposite in both data and battery usage. Read about IMAP idle before you make such assumptions.

I would do that but it's my work email which is on the exchange server and they aren't to happy about me forwarding all my email to a personal account.:(

Slightly annoying Gmail don't expand their app to also do exchange accounts but hey ho.

You can leave work account as it is and forward everything else, way easier than managing multiple accounts.
 
I'm getting notifications from both gmail and stock email client every time i get a single email. I want gmail to be my default, and to not get notifications when i receive emails... help?

Open up the stock email client press menu > settings > you can then set sync settings for each account and also control notifications. If your using the gmail app then turn off email sync as will save you battery.
 
Hey guys, just switched from the iphone after years and I'm perplexed. Why cannot I not empty the trash in gmail ? No option to delete ?

Another question. I wanted to set up my work email as well but don't see a way to turn off the email like I had on the iphone. confusing !
