Help Gmail won't sync

At some point today my phone has developed a problem syncing my Gmail. The last time it synced successfully was at 1111 this morning. Since then when I go into my Gmail on the phone it displays just 2 recent messages, and below that I get an error message with a red exclamation mark saying "No connection", and a button "Try again". If I do try again I get the same result.

If I go to Settings and then Accounts/Sync I can see that my Google account has a red sync symbol. At the bottom of the screen there is an error message stating that "Sync is experiencing problems. The program will be back soon." If I go into my Google account details there are exclamation marks against Sync Contacts and Sync Calendar. If I try to sync Gmail I see a red exclamation mark for a split second on top of the rotating sync symbol, and then it disappears. But my Gmail hasn't been synced.

If I tap on Sync Now at the bottom, the phone starts syncing all 3 categories, and the exclamation marks disappear. But then if I go back into my Gmail to retrieve my messages I still get no connection.

I am at a loss what to do to fix this. I really don't want to delete the Google account from my phone and reload it, as this would apparently involve performing a factory reset, which I am loathe to do unless I really have to. I would add that my Google account (contacts, mail and calendar) all appear fine on my PC.

Please can somebody help me sort this out. Thanks.

Well, I have discovered what was causing the problem, but not the reason why. I suddenly noticed that the weather app hadn't updated either, and when I tried to update it manually it told me there was no connection again. This was bizarre because I had wifi switched on, was in the same room as the wireless router, so distance was not an issue. Mobile data was switched off - I thought it remained on when I turned on the wifi? In any case, I switched on mobile data, and then hey presto, both the weather and Gmail worked again.

So why on earth wouldn't either app work on the wifi connection? This has never been a problem in the past. Has anybody else come across this bizarre situation?

I just had this problem, my weather widget has the red exclamation mark and my gmail shows one most recent mail and the No Connection sign.
I also have zero calendar entries, my gmail ones and also PC Sync ones have dissapeared.
I wonder if this is due to the weather widget as that is the only application i installed and used last nite and everything was working fine before this.
The weather widget i am talking about is Weather Forecast Widget, the free one.
I'll be trying to perform Pc Sync later on when i get home and updating my gmail and seeing if this happens again and if it does i'll remove the weather widget and see.
I don't have a Data Plan btw, only use WIFI

I spoke to a colleague at work today about this problem, and he suggested rebooting the wireless router. Apparently sometimes something can go wrong with a wireless network and the router may have a problem assigning an IP address to the phone. I have rebooted the router and this seems to have solved the problem, so try it at your end and see what happens.
