Going on a Cruise...Just Want to Use Wifi

If I only want to use wifi on my phone, while on a crusie (from florida to bahamas), how does that work, as far as billing? I have an Everything Data plan.

I don't work for Sprint but...

If you didn't have service on your phone, you should still be able to use wifi.

There should be no charges for only using wifi.

Wifi is not through your carrier. Turn on Airplane Mode, then turn on Wifi. Connect to whatever access point you can find. I have no idea if the cruise ship charges for connectivity.

You'll want to be careful you don't go into roaming. I believe if you turn on airplane mode, then enable wifi, it should work.

Oops. TheEngineer answered first.

That's what I thought, but someone said something that insinuated I might get charged for it. Didn't make sense to me. Thanks for clarifying. :)

Just took a 7 day cruise in February and the WiFi on the ship was not free, as a matter of fact it was a little expensive. Relax and enjoy your trip!

put your phone on airplane mode. that shuts off all radios.

Then turn on wifi.

This will ensure you don't accidentally roam or anything like that.

I know a lot of people who by Android phones and use them without data plans. So no phone calls or SMS. the phone functions perfectly for data via wifi. Carrier independent at that point.

I'm not planning on being bored enough to want to, but if I do want to check up on things, it's nice to know I can. :)

thanks for bringing this up. i've not traveled outside of the US with my phone (well, with one that has wifi capability) so this was good info.

planning on a trip soon, so was searching around for tips and tricks. i'm preparing my Epic 4G now with some apps. i downloaded Skype and also found an app called GrooVe IP that works with google voice number over wifi. also looked into a couple of apps that links me up to my pc at home over the air...

Dang, thats terrible. How much was it, and which cruise liner did you go on?

I have a cruise to the bahamas on carnival pride coming up.

It was Princess Cruise and we had a great time. I remember looking at the WiFi fee and thought it was not worth it. We stopped in Puerto Rico and St. Thomas which are both US territories and my phone worked just fine at those places.

I only used it to report work online. I opted for the 75 cents a minute deal. They had several pricing options. I just did what I had to do and got off of their network!

Carnival cruisers, seriously, download ShipMate from the market!!!

You hit upon the right method to save money while cruising. Because of the outrageous wi-fi rates, the best method is to sign-in to the wi-fi network just long enough to download your email, etc. Then, respond off-line. Later, you can sign on and send your email replies that you have already composed.

The idea is to spend less than a minute or two per day just downloading messages and email. One minute in the morning, one minute in the evening.

(After all, this is a VACATION and you don't need to be surfin' the net when you should be out in the sun.)

I just took this trip with my Evo in March and it will not work. You wont get a solid enough signal once you get out of Miami. You will have to use the ships wifi and good luck with that. Its a prime spot for hackers and I had my bank card number stolen, my Facebook hacked and my email all screwed up. Dont use the ships wifi.

Geez, you sure must have been on the ship's wi-fi for more than a few minutes a day for them to hack your accounts! If you just use the ship's wi-fi for uploading and downloading email, there is no time for someone to hack your accounts.

I was gonna say..jeez! And who has time on a cruise to be bothered with even trying to hack anyway??

Seriously? If Starbucks and Barnes and noble public wifi is prime for hacking, a cruise with 2500 people no doubt doing things with credit cards is hacker heaven. You can be on for 5 seconds or 5 hours, won't matter. They can get you the second you log on, it's all done auto. Not like it's some kid sitting there in his basement waiting for you to log on. They dont hsve to be on the ship at all, this isn't the movies...

Ya know..., the network on cruise ships is secured a lot better than your local Starbucks. The obvious reason for that is the cruise ship lines don't want ANYONE getting free access to the network. In fact, since every log-in is detailed and recorded, it would be pretty easy to figure out who is fishing the network.

Even so, if you go around worried about someone hacking your phone in 60 seconds, you must have an incredible amount of anxiety over life in general.

Perhaps some of your anxiety will be relieved by the discovery of a major security flaw in the Android system: Major security flaw affects Google Android phones - May. 18, 2011

"Though the researchers found that any unsecured application making use of an Android user's photos, contacts or calendars could be compromised, the data an attacker can gain access to is limited to those three groups. The security bug does not, for example, allow intruders to view a user's e-mails."

Google has since secured the contacts and calendar. We wait for the photo fix. The point to mention this is that open wi-fi networks are everywhere. How you use and protect your data means that unless you transmit the data or have it laying in your cell phone for the asking, it is a bit paranoid (and a cause for much unnecessary anxiety) to worry about credit cards, etc. over a secure cruise network.
