Going to root a friends phone...

So I don't even have an android phone (yet) and my buddy just moved from an Iphone to a hero. He is a little dissapointed with the responsiveness of the phone. So I looked up tips and tricks and came to the conclusion that he needs to root his phone.

Am I correct, I need to get htc sync for the laptop.

Then the prekitchen with the patch

Root the phone with the prekitchen.

Then I can flash fresh 1.1 (seems to be the ROM of choice)

Couple of questions, is backing up easy, and an option I will see during the process?

Am I missing anything?

I am no expert but what you are listing is exactly what I did. The only issue I had was with drivers on my Windows 7 64-bit machine. Once I got that taken care of, it was smooth sailing with pre-kitchen. I did root at least twice because I wasn't sure it worked.

You can back up once you've rooted. There is a step to do this with pre-kitchen.

Sweet, thanks for the quick reply... I am planning on doing this tomorrow. I am coming from the Windows Mobile world, and when you "root" a WM phone and upgrade the rom it is much easier to brick a phone.

Always approach these things with caution and respect...
