Root Gold card question?

Oh Dae Su

Newbie
Hi I am going to root my T Mobile desire. I have read the faq and down loaded all the tools I need. I have a couple of questions about gold cards though.
As I understand it and please correct me if I'm wrong, a gold card debrands your phone so I assume it must be in the phone all the time.
Thanks in advance :)

No you only need the gold card in the phone when you debrand your phone you can then remove it although if you ever to use another ruu/ota update you will need the goldcard back in the phone.

For this reason alot of people make their main sd card a goldcard so there is no need to swap.

Thanks for the info. If I want to make my main SD card a gold card can i plug the phone into my laptop and copy all my data over, some pics, vids and some apps then format the card make it a gold card and then copy everything back to the card without any detriment to the stuff that was on the card to start with ?

Yes.

Just make sure you get all the hidden files/folders as well - anything that starts with an '.', like '.android'. Although, in Windows, these shouldn't be hidden anyway.

So if I want to make my main SD card a gold card before rooting my phone. Should I install HTC sync and then delete the app to leave just the drivers when I plug my phone in to copy over my data before formatting it and making it a gold card. Or do I just need to that as part of the rooting process as described in unrevoked's guide to rooting?
Thanks in advance.

You don't need to do that as part of the Goldcard creation process, but it won't hurt if you do. As you say, you need to do it as part of the rooting process anyway...
