Apps Good device for developers

What's a good Android device for developers? Should include Android 2.2 for me. I'm new at this, so I'm not sure whether I'm asking the question right.

- You have the emulator that comes with the SDK, though it is some what slow.
- You can buy a completely normal android device and use that one to try out apps
- You can buy a unlocked developer phone from google here, but you must have a google account
