Stock sms/mms is yawningly boring!!!!!
Hangouts is cool but requires a data connection to use I read... Correct me if I am wrong... I average 1000 texts a month......

Believe it or not, Verizon messages is really good. Lots of options and very reliable. Yaata is a new one that looks great but it a bit buggy yet. Look for it on XDA, it's still in testing mode.

Try to install the new Google messenger app for SMS. Just like usual SMS, SMS options are available on the Messenger settings page, including notifications, read receipts and MMS handling. It's not boring because of the colorful SMS box.

I thought all SMS required a data connection to use.

I am currently in love with Textra. Very slick Material Design UI, and it is fast and smooth, even on non-Lollipop devices.

SMS works without data (certainly on GSM, where it's part of the basic network protocols - I've never used a CDMA network since they are geographically limited). MMS requires data to work.

I'll second Textra. Evolve is also good, but I find Textra much faster.
