Help Google Backup

I have an LG G3 that I backup to Verison, but that has been buggy. I want to use Google Backup, but have a question. It says it backs up to my gmail account, and I don't know what that means. Is that different than backing up to the cloud? And, do I use my regular gmail account or do I create a new one for backup?

It will use the Google account you use for the Play Store on the phone. It's a cloud backup, because all that phrase means is "stored on a server via the Internet".

Personally I don't use it so can't tell you how well it works (I prefer to manage these things myself, but as I'm rooted I have more options there).
