I have just had a few hours of mystery and found an answer.
I noticed yesterday that my Note 2 had not synced its calendars in either direction on any of the 4 google accounts on it for 10 days (since 25th March). Everything else was syncing. I tried all the usual solutions - uninstall recent apps, remove accounts and restore them, clear data/cache etc (I didn't do a factory reset) but nothing worked.
I then saw a post suggesting that Google Calendar is needed. I installed Google Calendar from Playstore and it has all worked since! I dont use google calendar at all but if I uninstall it calendar sync stops working! Maybe google have introduced a "feature"?
Anyway, maybe this will help someone.
