Google Contacts default country code with Android

Hi

I'm new to this forum and hope I'm posting this in the right section. I have recently noticed the little flag and default country code for phone numbers. As I'm in the UK I have selected UK (+44).

If I select any country other than my default, Google Contacts automatically adds that countries code and it will appear correctly in my contacts list (People) on my Nexus 4.2.2 phone.

However if I select my default country the number that appears in my phone's contact list is exactly what I enter in Google contacts. in other words I unless I manually add the country code, the phone's contacts display (and try to dial) without the code and therefore the number is not recognised.

It seems strange that Google would implement this in such a way that numbers from Google Contacts would not transfer to Android phones correctly

Has anyone else come across this 'feature' and found a way round it?

Hello,

I don't know if you'd be willing to try a custom app, but if you are, I have a replacement dialer app in the market that fixes this problem, and many other niggles with the stock phone app.
Basically, it formats incomplete stored numbers according to your home country (i,e, country of your SIM card), and dialled numbers according to your current country(i.e. country of the network). Tons of other features, besides.

Try it here.

You could just do it like I do. That is, manually add ALL contact phone numbers with the correct international dialling code. Even for the UK (where I am) I do this. That way you always have the correct number even when non holiday/business abroad. There are no downsides to doing this in the UK - though if you do this in a different country (i.e. use the international code on a local number) things could be different. I've had too much hassle, like the OPs, with systems that "autofill" the international codes.
