Help Google Contacts Snyc fails

rsa

Well-Known Member
I've had my EVO since the release date and have been able to sync my email, calendar and contacts from my Gmail account with no problems since day one. But yesterday I noticed that my phone had the sync symbol in the notification banner all day and burning up my battery. I finally isolated it to my Gmail contact sync failing and constantly trying to sync. The error message is " Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly."

This problem has been going on for 12 hours now and I can't find anything that would explain why the smyc failure is occurring. I've looked for a setting that may account for the problem on both the phone and my Gmail account and have found nothing.

Any ideas on what the problem is or what actions to take to fix it? Now I have to manually sync the account and cancel sync when it starts looping on the contacts sync!

Thanks for any ideas!

Try this: Go to Settings Accounts and Sync Uncheck Auto SYnc then Uncheck Background Data Once disabled go in reverse Check Background Data and Check Auto sync then run a manual sync on your Google account and see if it works.

I appreciate the suggestion but unfortunately it didn't help.

Does anyone know if there is some kind of configuration file that controls the syncing of the three components of Gmail, that being the calendar, contacts and email, that might be corrupted?

Have you tried disabling syncing of contacts, run a sync then re-enable the contact syncs and run a sync again? have you tried removing the connection and rebuilding it?

Yes, in fact I'm currently running auto sync with the contacts unchecked to keep the phone out of infinite sync and burning up my battery. I've tried several times to see if contacts will successfully sync and yes the problem continues.

As for removing the account and adding it back. . . . do you have any idea of whether or not that is simply going to exchange one problem for another in the form of destroying my contact list on the phone with duplicates and god know what other errors? Because apparently at this point either no one else has had this problem or also has the problem and hasn't found a solution either!

I've been getting that message basically since I bought the phone, but despite the message, it does, in fact, sync my contacts.

Check this out and let me know if it works:

Problems with sync - Google Mobile Help

Thank you for the link! The first time I tried the process it didn't help my problem. But because it didn't seem to take any time at all after re-booting the phone for it to be finished syncing I assumed that I must have done something wrong and the data was not purged. So I waited a day and today I tried the process all over again. It didn't take any longer after the re-boot to complete the sync process but this time the contact re-sync worked without an error and was successful! Of course now in hindsight I had removed the checkbox for syncing the contacts and didn't manually attempt to sync contacts before I went though the process described in your link. But since it had failed so many times in the past I have to assume that it would have failed again today and that the process described in your link did in fact fix the problem. Though I have no idea (other then user error) why it to two tries to fix the problem.

Regardless, thank you very much for taking the time to find that link and to post it for me. I appreciate it very much! :D

I got the same problem, but the link in the previous post is broken.
Could someone post the information itself in this forum or provide a new link? Can't find it!

Have you try shutting down your phone and then bringing it back up. Sound like its in some kind of loop. Just a thought, can't hurt.
