Google contacts sync down.

My Evo and my wife's hero say sync is having problems and will be back shortly. It is only contacts, Gmail and calendar sync fine. This has been going on since Saturday, anybody else having problems.

I'm not, but I'm seeing posts in just about every device forum about sync issues, more than usual (some FB, some Twit, many many Gmail contacts, etc).

I've been advising to clear data and cache and defaults on syncing apps (including Gmail Storage) in application manager and rebooting then reconfiguring just to see if that washes the problem out.

Mixed results tell me it's not necessarily a device issue, but issues with the actual social networking sites, or the Google/Gmail known wiggy behavior, etc.

OK, I cleared cache/data, no reconfiguring was required, it did everything automatically, and nothing!

This is really frustrating, I had a problem with my phone Sunday that required a recovery and lost quite a few phone numbers in the process since Google sync was down. Had to load from a backup done in January. They should come back whenever sync comes back, but it doesn't seem to be. This is obviously a Google problem, if it was limited to Evo's I might wonder, but the wife's Hero is affected as well.

Just checked the Google help forums, this is a known problem with some posts going back to June 2010! There is not a single reply from Google on any post and many have been closed to new replies, apparently Google has no intention of fixing this issue.

I have tried the suggestions and nothing is working, hate to say it, but if they aren't going to fix this I will have to switch to WP7 (can't do iPhone), this is my business phone and I can't afford problems like this.

On edit: Just checked Gmail contacts and apparently my phone hasn't been syncing for a little over a month, I have lost a whole lot of important numbers!

I know how you feel,it is very annoying ,I had a wp7 for a while but couldn't live with its limitations so went to android. To be honest I had contact sync problems with google on the wp7 as well

Amazing. Thanks for reporting that here.

The only reason I use Gmail at all is Android doesn't do a two way sync with Outlook.

Well i guess i am not alone. I can add a new contact to my phone and it will show up in google when you snyc it, but i have 500 contacts on my phone and it will not transfer to google. I just bought an Epic and transfered all the contacts over from my old palm phone. I am looking for a way to back up these contacts and thought gmail would be the way.

There is a fix, unfortunately it is a factory reset! And this does not prevent the problem from coming back. Apparently HTC & Sprint recognize the problem but Google doesn't seem to want to do anything about it.

If this is an ongoing issue and doesn't get fixed it will kill Android for me entirely.
