* or pretty pixel patterns, or a transparent/invisible space, or a completely customized image - but this is The Internet, and gosh darnit we love cats.

Most of the content internet is supported primarily through advertising. It's an unpleasant truth, since a lot of those ads tend to be ugly and intrusive, but content writers (and forum moderators, right Rob?) gotta get paid.

Have you ever thought to yourself, "You know, I really enjoy visiting this site but I hate dealing with all the ads. I know the site needs funds from advertising to keep the lights blinking on their servers, but I wish I could just toss some change in a tip jar rather than deal with these ads." ?

Google Contributor is that tip jar.
(Not a perfect analogy, deal with it.)

With Contributor, you pay a monthly fee of your choice ($1-10), and Google uses that money to pay the site for the place of the AdSense ads you would otherwise see. You can choose to limit that effect to only certain sites (like AndroidForums.com and Phandroid.com) or spread the funds across the millions of other sites that also use AdSense. And you can also pick what gets presented in place of the ads:

You can even enter a custom HTTPS URL to use an image of your choice!

So now, instead of this:

Android Forums looks like this:

And the content creators still get paid!

As with most other new things from Google, Contributor is in an invite-only beta period. The link to sign-up, as well as more information about the program, can be found here: https://www.google.com/contributor/welcome/

I've been using Contributor for ~28 hours now...

So. Many. Cats.

Anyone sign-up to try this:
https://www.google.com/contributor/welcome/

I'm giving it a trial,for a couple months.
Don't really need it @ home, but,I'm already seeing the difference using the work PC.
Mobile device use,not enough time used yet to see/notice,perhaps in the upcoming weekend.

Kinda interesting that Google's bread & butter is advertising revenue, & to seemingly make $ from the end-user to not have those ads (to varying degrees, dependent upon subscription level).
Again, not sure if Google is collecting/keeping any of the Contributor $ before disbursing back to those the money is supposed to help.

Any thoughts/ideas/more information on the subject are welcome. :thumbsupdroid:

Tbh it's not really something I'd go for.
Like the only time ads bother me is on youtube and even then, they don't bother me enough that I'd pay to get rid of them (80% of shit I watch on youtube is random stuff uploaded by normal peeps who don't have advertising anyway) :)
EDIT just put myself on the list #justbecause :D

On what I'd consider "normal"=(non-spam clickbait sites),it does indeed make a difference.
However, start clicking on some of the "Infotainment Ads" = Click bait & all bets are off, right back to pop-up Hell.
It's definitely not a replacement for an ad blocker, but, avoid the S***sites & the difference is appreciably noticeable.
I can see where this would make a difference on mobile devices, for those who are not rooted & cannot install a decent ad blocker.

That's the thing mate. My current phone isn't even rooted so no adaway but ads just don't seem to bother me in normal browsing (apart from those super annoying ones that take over the whole screen grr) but if they were pixelated they'd still be a pita lol

On a few of my "important to me" apps, most of them related to GPS functions, I will pay for the ad free version.

MacroDroid instantly got my Premium Vote when I saw its' power to let me control how my phone works.

The rest of the stuff, like CNN, BBC, FoxNews, I ignore their ads and go on.

This presumably only works if you are logged into Google when browsing? Since I always log out of Google immediately after doing something that needs a Google login (e.g. Play Store on the web - it's my policy not to aid Google in profiling me) that wouldn't work for me.

as 99% of my internet browsing is on my Desktop PC using Firefox, I have filters to stop all tracing period.

Disconnect
▪ Stop tracking by 2,000+ third-party sites.

NoScript
  • NoScript allows JavaScript, Java (and other plugins) only for trusted domains of your choice (e.g. your home-banking web site). This whitelist based pre-emptive blocking approach prevents exploitation of security vulnerabilities (known and even unknown!) with no loss of functionality…

This is why I'm guessing a low percentage of users will use Contributor at all,or,just on a trial basis/curiosity.

I actually posted about this in the dead Google forum, but I'll gladly join the discussion here. :)

I'm also trying it out for a bit, and opted for the $5 level:

Of course, I've been at it for under a week and AF has already claimed more than my contribution level, so I'm not really sure what to make of that... I'll probably tune it next month to only work on AF.

I don't have a problem with the adverts, they never make it thru "Disconnect", AdBlock, and AdFender, NoScript anyway on my Win7 PC.
