How come all my received photos on Google Hangouts come out like this?

can you download the image. i have not used hangouts in so long....didn't know people still used it....LOL

Ya they just look like that in the google hangouts message inbox but once you press on them they open to full screen and look fine (and you can download them too).
Any idea how to fix it?

As far as it appearing in hangouts....... Not sure. Maybe try wiping cache and data for hangouts. Or try uninstalling and re-installing hangouts.
