Google is taking over my phone!

I mentioned in a previous post that now, when I tap the Google widget on my home page, it lists pages of news items and ads that I've never inquired about. Now I am also getting icons (wrench) in the notification bar telling me to do things like update my phone number in Google. Nothing I do will make this icon/message go away.
I swear none of this was happening as recently as 6 or 7 months ago.

Someone suggested that if I held my finger down on an ad or news item I could identify the source and adjust a setting for an app to stop it. Candidly, that didn't work 99% of the time. And, I can't find a "stop this sh*t" setting in Google.

Any suggestions, or is this the "new" Google?
 
What phone do you have, and what OS version?

I have a wrench icon in my notification slide, but that's a shortcut to Settings. And though I've occasionally had junk from Google (such as something telling me the weather, which I had thought that turning Assistant off completely would stop) but nothing I can't swipe away. This is with a Pixel 2, which is probably as "Googly" a phone as you can get.

Thanks Hadron. Its an LG G3 with Marshmallow. I know this is about 3 generations old, but still works for me. It was especially nice to be able to change the battery after 2 years. I admit this is mostly nuisance stuff, but it would still be nice if Google gave you an option to opt out.
 
Hmm, Marshmallow is actually an OS version I've never used: my tablet, and my old phone, topped-out at Lollipop, and now I've jumped straight to Oreo so am unlikely ever to use MM.

Hopefully someone more familiar with this device will see the post and have some suggestions. I did just check my "Google Settings" and see that "device phone number" is blank for me. If they do ever post a reminder to me about that one I'll see what I can do with it, but so far haven't had any unremovable nags from them.

This is interesting. I found it when I got MM. Followed the advice, too.

I get the occasional notice that such and such an app just updated from Play Store.

Since I won't allow any auto updating, I check, and nothing has changed, nothing's been updated. Some app must be sending it automatically. I'd bet it'd something in one of Google's services as I have disabled most of Google on the phone.

I've got a Oneplus 5 running Oxygen's form of Nougat.
