Google Map saving problem

alantipo

Newbie
I am off on my travels and I often save maps for use offline however I find that Google won't allow me to save some locations, in particular Gibraltar, Barcelona and Seville?
If I move my selected area off of the required locations I am 'allowed' to save.
Any ideas? Military connections?

Alan

Hello and welcome to the forums . I see you having problems with your device . Well i dont know much on google maps . But the device might not allow you to save is due to the lack of space on a SD card or internal space.

Thanks for your reply. I am fairly new to smartphones and android.
My device is not overloaded with apps (Sony Tipo) with a 32gb card installed, but I can save other areas?
It's as though it might be a security problem.

Its could be agreements Google has with the governments in those locations.

I'm honestly not sure though

Maybe those roads or area has been updated and are under construction , or road closed due the events of floods, block parties or honoring federal officers . Have you tried this on another pc or other device .

It's not the device, and I don't think it's security either (for security issues you don't show an area at all). I've met other places Maps won't save, and assume it's a legal or licensing issue.

I just tried, and mine says it can't save anywhere in Spain. You can trick it with coastal towns, because if most of the window is over the sea it thinks it's left Spain, but that's all. Move into Portugal and you're fine.

Thanks for trying!
Guess I could buy a map!

Alan
You'd try GPS apps which can download free OpenStreetMaps for offline use.
On some areas these maps have more details as Google Maps :)

If you just need showing your actual location on the map and don't need navigation/routing/tracking then you'd have a look at 'MapsWithMe'. The app has an easy user interface, an excellent offline search function and a convenient download manager for the maps.

If you need additionally navigation/routing/tracking you'd have a look at 'OsmAnd' with its amazing features ... but its user interface is not that easy, might say more clumsy :)

Thanks Harry, I have downloaded MapsWithMe and a couple of maps and I must say it looks pretty good!
and available in Google's forbidden areas!

You're welcome, Alan :)

Maybe you've saved POIs/Favorites on Google Maps or Earth with the browser on your PC?
No problem to import them as .kml file on MapsWithMe :)

What's happening here? Spain doesn't like Google? Bit limited then if one can't save off-line maps of Spain in Google Maps. Don't think Garmin or Magellan or Nokia Maps ever had that issue.

Google Maps can save off-line maps of China and Vietnam and North Korea, but not Spain apparently....hmmm.

It might be a copyright problem.
I guess Google has to licence some basic maps by buying or leasing.

Just spent a while locating all my forthcoming cruise destinations and now have all the maps for our docking ports!
Great stuff, thanks again.
