google maps available off line ... but!

One of the three features that convinced me to buy the N7 is the offline maps of google maps. You can select the area you want to have available offline and save it. It works great until two days ago when I realized you can only save 6 areas. Only six?

I just tested. I zoomed out and it let me save 75MB of maps, from Kissimmee, FL to Daytona Beach, FL. That spans 4 counties. I am impressed. With 6 areas, I could get just about all of Florida.

Going to Tennessee soon on holiday. Will probably save the entire state. Never know where you are going to run out of cell towers in the mountains.

I live in said mountains, that's a good decision :-)

If you end up near Jackson, drop me a line :-)

Although it is paid for app, CoPilot works pretty well on my Nexus 7. It stores maps locally, so you don't need a wifi connection - just GPS. It is so good that I will probably sell my Navman sat-nav.

Looks like you can select a fairly large area so that you can cover quite a bit of the map with each and the storage limit is 100 megabytes per area. I just selected a large area which included my smaller areas of Cranston, Boston, Newport, and half of the Cape.

MapDroyd is a good offline map. but it doesnt have navigation.
I use Navfree but its not that good on one way streets and optimizing the route.
Also you have to download each states separate, no download all option.
Both of them are free.

Thanks again. I knew Maps would cache maps offline, but they must have made them bigger recently. I just deleted any I had saved and re-did them and now I can do whole cities rather than small area. Wish nav would work with them offline (without having to pre route the trip)

Download NavFree, you can load in any maps you require. I am using the UK version but the US version allows state by state load. It is absolutely free, fantastic piece of software with 2d/3d views. It is free, cant be beat.
