Just an update...this seems to have stopped happening on my phone. When I first responded to the thread my phone was only a day old. I've had it for a week not and maps has stopped sucking up all my phone resources.
It's almost like Maps needed a few days to learn my patterns and where it was...now it's settled down and usually in the single digits when I check the percentage of battery used by maps.
Definitely strange....and I guess it could crop up again...but for now it's running smooth. I've made no major changes to my phone nor the way I'm using it.
