Help Google Maps continually running in the background

Hi guys,

Ever since Google Maps' recent update (the one which implemented 3Dness), I've noticed the app always running in the background. It wouldn't bother me so much if it behaved quietly in its corner, but it's using up close to 15mb of RAM!

Could anyone explain this? I don't make a habit of manually killing apps but if I do, it just comes back within 2 minutes.

Just because it's taking up space, that doesn't necessarily mean that it's slowing anything down.
