Help Google Maps Force Close

Lurker
Hello,

This is my first post, so I apologize if this has been answered before. I couldn't find a solution to my problem in search.

I've just purchased a refurbished HTC Droid Eris as my first android phone. I have almost no apps on the phone, but whenever I try to use google maps, the process stops unexpectedly and I am forced to close the app. I can not re-install and update to a new version because I get the error "Package file was not singed correctly." I also get a similar error to the google maps one every time I start my phone that says something like "com.htc.bg has stopped" or something similar to that.

Please help, I have done an hard reset of the phone. The phone came with and is running 2.1. I haven't rooted.

Thank you for your help!

As I recall, the com.htc.bg error is an issue with the Facebook fot HTC Sense contact syncing. If you go into (from home) settings->accounts & sync and delete the Facebook account, restart the phone, does it come back? As I also recall, one issue can be if you have contacts with an apostrophe in their name, such as "O'Brien". Unfortunately, I can't recall if there is a sure-fire fix if that is the issue ... sorry. Perhaps somebody else will remember?

As for the Google Maps issue, here is what I would try: again, from home, go into settings->applications->manage applications. Wait for the window to refresh - it can take as long as a couple of minutes or so - and then look for "Maps" in that list. Tap "Maps", then tap "clear data". See if that helps.

If it does not, you can try going in to the same place and tap the button "uninstall updates" (if it is there) and see if that helps.

Also, just to ask, in (I think) settings->storage, there is a listing for available space under "internal phone memory". How much is in that box?
