Google Maps goes offline!

The one in the black box is what i saved. Seems like 80mb is the maximum size i've tried to grab more but it won't let me to.

This has been available for quite a while in the development portion of the app

Is this different somehow?

You can do multiple locations, too. It'll name the sections after the largest city in the map.

It's good, I just hate the 80MB limit. I can download multiple 80MB portions, so they may as well just let me download the lot if I want!

All I've done is downloaded a portion of a common journey I make, then scrolled along and downloaded the other portion. Would be good if you could visually see which parts were available offline!

Do love the feature though, don't get me wrong :D

Yeah, the 80MB limit seems like such an abitary number. I think I'd have preferred the ability to do entire states or regions.

How is this different from pre-cache? In the Labs option, I cached the entire eastern seaboard of the US. Now they publicly announce it and it is only 80 MB? Wtf?

Once you've update your maps it will remove pre -cache option and your cache along with that . At least it removed my cache

this is good, but surely, its offline navigation that is needed, especially if driving abroad etc... gps works without connection, so if uve got the maps cached... i dont see the problem... how often do u need maps and hav been let down with no signal and its a major problem?? never?

So you mean just Maps, but it doesn't also work for Navigation, right? That seems like a step back to me. So Navigation can't be used completely offline? Does it still precache just in case you lose signal while navigating?

I'm reluctant to update Maps without good reviews because of what happened pre 4.0.4 on the GNex.

This is a GIANT step back. I could have unlimited caching before, now it is 80 MB. I'm definitely uninstalling this update and going back to an older version.

Hey folks...

So I updated to the latest version of Google Maps (ICS, Galaxy Nexus).

I was happy that the "Offline Maps" feature was finally available.

Problem: I downloaded all of London, Paris and San Francisco. I zoomed way in to them, and found (at least in London and Paris, and some of the Bay Area), smaller streets were missing labels. I had turned off data on the phone to see what level of detail was available in this new offline maps feature.

It appears that only major streets (and some minor ones, but by no means ALL streets) are downloaded. You see they are there, but their names are missing.

When I turned data back on the phone and examined the same area at the same zoom level, the name appeared.

So... Google is saying you can download maps to look at offline. How useful is that if you only get PARTIAL data, not ALL data, for a given area?

Can anyone see that as well? Make sure to clear your cache/stored tiles, load a major city for viewing offline, then turn off all data connectivity and zoom way in to some smaller streets.

- Tim
