Google Maps/Google Navigation

Google Maps and Google Navigation appear to be two individual apps. Is there an advantage to using one over the other?

I don’t use GPS -- a necessity for Navigation, so I can’t quite answer you, other than to say that navigation holds your hand, knows where you are and tells you where to go, while Maps just shows you a map and you have to figure out how to read it. Maps can give directions though, shown on the map and in text.

Maps isn't a turn-by-turn destination app as Navigation is. Maps just shows you the destination in relation to your location, but not how to get there.

BUT the Navigation app is actually a part of the Maps app. Like when you update Maps in the Android Market, you're also updating Navigation and one or two others (Places is one, I think). But Maps will still show you where you are on the map in real time using GPS. Navigation is satnav like a TomTom or Garmin unit. And it is just as good or better than those, imo.

Maps lets you save a destination. Navigation does not. But once you save the point in maps, it's available in navigator. Bass ackwards, if you ask me.

Navigation does save destinations:

Navigation does save destinations:

that is just your past search history, like a browser. Let's say you went to a destination 6 months ago and now you need to go back... Good luck finding it in your history. (unless of course you don't ever use your google nav, then it won't matter.)

When you save it as a 'starred' point in maps, it is always available in Nav and easy to find, and of course you don't have to worry about your search history being erased.

I see what you're saying.

"I see"...said the blind man to his deaf son...

Thanks for all the responses. I use Google Nav for directions and rarely ever open Maps. But it appears that Nav would not exist w/o Maps.
