Root Google Maps - "no my maps found"

I have a Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2, Android 2.3.6 (I think). While connect to wi-fi, I used to be able to download and save offline maps in Google Maps. Not something I use all the time, but starting a few months ago I noticed that Google Maps started 'freezing' occasionally, and the only way to recover was to hold the power button until it re-booted. I also noticed that after downloading a map, when I go to My Maps, it doesn not list it, and instead says "No My Maps found". This used to work. What could I have messed up? I've tried clearing the cache and the other option listed with cache.
