Google maps - offline viewing available

I tried testing this by turning wifi and 3g off after downloading. It stayed on "getting driving directions" for 10 minutes until I turned it off. Hopefully an update will fix this and allow us to define the size of the map that it downloads.

Odd... I downloaded maps for my neighborhood and turned wifi/3g/4g off (kept GPS on of course) and it was able to pull up the map right away... maybe try to restart your phone? (not sure)

Were you able to get navigation directions?

I just tried it and it works. It also stores cache on SD card, so Maps cache doesn't build up internally.

Anyone have any idea why 'labs' doesn't show up in the menu? The only options I get in the 'more' menu are:

Help
Terms, Privacy & Notices

Labs is not listed.

Yes & yes. Updating was the first thing I did. New version changed nothing. And step 2 can't be done until the 'labs' option is available.
So... you have downloaded Google Maps 5.7.0 (#5713) and you open it and select Menu > More > and Labs is not showing... is that correct?

I'm guessing that you haven't, for whatever reason, got the latest version of Google Maps then.

What do you get when you hit menu/about? I see version 5.7.0 and a list of other items and their versions...near the bottom is LABS 21.30 If you're not seeing this you don't have the lastest Maps, or you uninstalled something you shouldn't have.

Labs is 30 for me.

Must vary between models/firmware I guess.

[EDIT]: Issue resolved. My mistake I was opening up from navigation app instead of the actual 'Maps' application.

Any idea if there is a limit to the number of areas one can download?

Also, where is it stored on the SD card?

Note: If you go to cache settings, you can rename or delete areas that you've downloaded previously.

I read that it was 10 areas from one of the sites.

Thanks for the tip.
After downloading the map, how do you find it again in the future?

Go to:

Menu --> More --> Cache Settings --> Dowloaded map areas

From there you can edit the name or delete it. If you press on one, it brings you back to the map and shows you the squares.

Fair play to you for admitting your mistake... :D

Hope everything is fine now. Enjoy!

In my defense though, wouldn't it seem logical for both apps to operate the same way and offer up the same menus? Seems a little odd they don't.

On the other hand, if two apps operate the same way and have the same menus, how do I know they aren't just copies of the same app?
