Is there any replacement for Google maps? Its a nuisance (albeit a small one) for the maps service to constantly run when I use it maybe once a month.. thanks guys

You can try Nav Free. It let's you download maps for states. The downside is the maps are around 160mb or larger. But works really well.

If your phone is rom'd or rooted, you could use an app like "App Quarantine ROOT/FREEZE" to freeze maps until you need it. Though there are lots of other map apps available if you want a different one.

freezing and unfreezing.. bleh.. too lazy.. i have mapquest at the moment... actually a viable replacement.. and it stops when you stop it. no 3d maps tho

I know it's hard to wrap your mind around how Android OS works if your a hardcore PC user. but its ok for a service to be running in android, Android actually even caches most of the main apps in RAM so they open faster, which is why clearing the ram with a memory optimizer app is a BAD idea unless your doing it right before opening a resource intensive game. look in the Battery Use screen, if maps isn't anywhere near the top, its not hurting anything by running. and it IS a nice app. however, if maps IS using majority of battery, then I see the validity in your concern and it would be alright to uninstall it completely

Well my battery definitely lasts longer without it installed... at least a couple hours.. so for now mapquest it is... it doesn't run at all when not in use.. it's not as pretty but it'll do.. thanks for the info tho
