Google Maps rerouting

I have an issue with Google maps - why doesn't it reroute you if you take a wrong turning? Sat navs reroute you or tell you to turn around as you have taken a wrong turn but google maps just goes silent until you get back onto the road that you should be on.
Do I need to set something up to enable this function?

My Google Nav yacks on, no matter what I do (driving detours), like any other regular satnav system. And so do all the Google Nav apps of friends and acquaintances that I know of. So your problem is not standard. Almost as if your Google Nav wasn't installed right. I would first very carefully check all my settings. If that doesn't improve stuff I would reset factory settings (after making a good backup! Copied to my PC). And if that doesn't improve stuff I would get the phone to tech service.

Thanks, I did think it was a bit odd. However, I was also doing a bit of google searching and found a lot of people saying that the only time Google maps reroutes is around busy traffic. Then I found a post to say that rerouting doesn't work on this app at all. I've checked my settings but everything seems fine. Does anybody else have this issue?

Mine has always rerouted, even before the traffic rerouting update a while back. I don't remember seeing anything in the settings that would have the affect of turning rerouting on / off.

Sorry I can't help more, but rerouting should work out of the box.

Google Maps is not like a normal sat nav. Sat navs have the full mapping stored in memory and only need GPS to operate fully.

Google Maps are not stored on your device so must download data, which it does when you first set the route. In theory it won't need to use any more data as long as you stick to the route but, if you detour, and it has to recalculate, it can only do it by downloading data again.

Could it be that your problem revolves around data download? If you haven't got a good phone signal, or data transmission is turned off, it cannot recalculate if you go off the original route.

For this reason I use Co-Pilot which, like a normal sat nav has the full map on my phone. When in Europe, where data download is very expensive, I can use Co-Pilot with data transmission turned off, just like a normal sat nav.

Thanks Motorhomer, when you say data transmission, do you mean roaming?
If so, when I try to turn this on, it warns me that I may incur large charges. Does this apply in the UK?

I wouldn't expect Google Maps to re-route but I don't use it for navigation anyways.

Use Google Navigator. It works brilliantly and will re-route you straight away.

It would appear from your reply that you don't have a problem with Google Maps and the reason that it's not re-routing is because data transmission is turned off.

Most people have a data download allowance as part of their monthly package. Mine is large enough to allow me to use Google maps in the U.K. if I wish. However, data packages in the U.K. only apply to the U.K. This means that, if I go to Europe, I have to pay extra for data transmission.

'Roaming' to me, means the ability to connect in other countries but it's in other countries where huge costs can occur.

I used to use Google Maps in the U.K. and it was excellent and would reroute without a problem but only because I had data transmission turned on but, if I go to France or Germany, it would cost me a fortune, which is why I now use Co-Pilot, which has the maps stored on my phone and does not need to use data at all.

Do you not have a data package as part of your monthly allowance? I also have no idea where you live and it always helps if you list that in your profile.

If you do a have a reasonable data package, turn it on and Google Maps should re-route without a problem.

If you are on some 'Pay as You Go system' my advice would be to buy Co-Pilot or one of its competitors, it will be less expensive in the long run.

Thanks again Motorhomer. I have updated where I live on my profile now.
Apologies, I'm not very savvy with technology.
I do have a 1GB data package per month which i don't think I use anywhere near that amount.
I'm assuming this means I can use data roaming free in the UK now then?

Actually, I'm probably talking Google Navigator anyway, which is based on Google Maps and I tend to refer to them simply as Google Maps. However, won't the OP have exactly the same problem in that he or she will still need to use data should it wish to re-route?

And, as I infer, that appears to be the problem in that he or she doesn't have data transmission turned on. I promise you, if you lived in England and went to Europe, you wouldn't be using Google Navigator! The data costs would pay for Co-Pilot in a couple of days!

That's correct. Turn on your data transmission and it should re-route quickly, although of course it's still dependent on a good signal so that it can download the changes.

You can get free apps that monitor your monthly usage so that you can see at a glance how much you're using. If you find that you're using a lot of data for navigation, or if you wish to use it in Europe, you really should go for Co-Pilot. It's brilliant and, in my opinion having used both, much better that Google Navigation.

Download 3G Watchdog from Android Market to check your data usage. Just enter your monthly-allowance start date and it will tell you how much you are using so that you won't exceed your limit.

You should leave data turned on permanently when in the U.K. as you've a large allowance. This will enable many applications and your contacts and diary etc. to update automatically.
