Google maps, Sat Nav & Data

Hi all,

Would appreciate some advice regarding the sat nav option in google maps.
I know it is reliant on the internet for data as no maps are pre installed but what I would really like to know is if I plot my route at home using wifi does it still take Data when I am on the move? my reason for asking is that I would like to use it when abroad but with data roaming changes if it is using the mobile internet it would be prohibitively expensive. Can you plot and store a journey and then switch off data?
Any advice would be most appreciated.

Richard

Yes. You can pre-download your route while on WiFi, switch off data, and travel that route guided by your phone. Only the voice/audio assisted turn-by-turn navigation will not work as that requires a live mobile data connection (which requires 'roaming' to be enabled outside your own country, which is expensive).

You can also pre-download maps (map tiles) of your choice for offline use (Google Maps > Menu > Offline) while on WiFi.

So basically I can use it as a sat nav, just without the voice? I assume I wouldn't be able to alter my route mid journey either would I?

Thanks for your quick reply.

Yes.

The cached maps and data allow for, limited, detours. But if you really want to drastically alter your route mid journey you can only do that if you switch on your mobile data connection (plus roaming if you're in another country), or if you connect – at that mid journey point – via WiFi again.
