The newest update to Google Maps will use vector graphics instead of tiles to display the maps, thereby using 100 times less data than previous versions. Due to the low data requirement, users will be able to load a larger area if offline. The offline mode will allow users to access the maps even without a data connection, but users will still need web access if they want to refresh them.
