Google Maps & Traffic

It seems to me like the traffic overlay on Google Maps isn't terrible accurate. Today we had portion of highway closed due to an accident and Maps was still showing it all green. Has anyone else had problems like this?

Is there another ap I can get for checking traffic issues?
 
I'm not sure what Google Traffic uses for it's updates. I'd assume it's the flow monitoring devices along the road, but I couldn't even begin to guess how far delayed it is. Any idea how long before you got there the accident had happened?
 
I use a web-based local traffic map that monitors traffic flow by reading transponders on cars on the highway. It's very accurate and is updated every minute. Google Maps isn't too bad for traffic in my area but it's nowhere near as useful as the traffic map. You might want to see if there's something similar in your area.
