Google Maps use so much battery? (Android v4.4.2)

Phone: Hydro icon
Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 8926 (Quad-core, 1200 MHz, ARM Cortex-A7)

from full charge, I'm down to 35% battery after 80min of use.
according to the 'Battery' screen, usage is 40% Maps, 20% screen, 20% cell stand-by.

My old phone, which broke, was running Android 5.1.x and had a Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 8909 (Quad-core, 1100 MHz, ARM Cortex-A7).
it had the same sized battery (2000 mAh).

That phone would be at 60% battery for the same duration.

Why is Maps using so much battery?

If you accidentally opened Maps.apk and didn't clear it from the Recent memory, or if Location is on.. that'll do it.

Same phone with different chipsets then, definitely different os's as stated in op new device thats draining battery is on 4.4.2 while the older device now broken ran 5.1 and drained less battery (assuming under same use). Clearing recents would work as you explain, but adding that theres an entire os change along with many internal optimizations between the devices is a very valid point to make. No need to be corrective Mr. :) also if you understand android well you mite want to see if governor and I/O schedulers differ between chipsets. Iv seen kernels with lower frequencies perform better than ones with higher simply because of the way the kernel was built or made to interact with certain device.

Have you just set the device up for the first time/has it been factory reset?

Is Maps downloading offline data for your local area in the background?

He said it was same device, same OS, same battery size. I'm familiar with the device he speaks of..
Where did you get same device from??

Hydro is running a Snapdragon 400.
Old phone uses Snapdragon 210.

(Old phone was a Alcatel Elevate.)

no, been using the Hydro for a week before I started using Maps.

I do not have offline data with Maps with either the new phone or the old.

Original Hydro, yes.. 210. I know about the Hydro Icon because my buddy had it. That device and my ZTE Warp Sync use the same chipset, the Snapdragon 400. I Rooted my buddy's Icon to debloat system and give him more room, which in turn helped speed it up and reduce further data consumption and battery drain. Maps is ALWAYS one of the biggest drains on battery since the GPS also uses a lot of power.
