Google Maps

Can anyone tell me how much data the Google Maps app uses?

I have an iPod touch, and on the version contained therein, I can't find the "More" menu in the app to check it, as apparently you can do on the Android version.

Thanks!

Thanks but I didn't mean how much space does it take up on the drive, I meant how much data does it download when it's in use.
That depends on how much you move around the maps, since they are online and need to be downloaded/cached on the phone for you to view them. Also zooming in/out requires map data.

The newest version of google maps for android uses very very little data. It doesn't download tiles for maps anymore (unless you have the satellite layer activated), but instead uses vector graphics which greatly reduces the amount of data for the maps. As well, zooming in/out has no effect on the amount of data used.

Unless you have the satellite layer turned on, or are constantly using street view, you'd probably never hit 1MB in a month. And even with satellite/street-view, it'd be quite a feat.

Google map has has been very useful when visiting new places. It really is great. I find the recent updates pointless though. I know that social networking is what people want there days but its mapping software, surely off road info such as OS maps would be a wires upgrade?

Thanks, Usta!
You live in Amsterday?
Yes, in Amsterdam. :)

I find it hard to believe that zooming in doesn't use extra data. In this process the Maps needs to do seek for extra information, such as business names and other POIs (not available initially when looking at zoomed out maps). To test this, you can open Maps, brake the internet connectivity, and try to zoom in. If you don't see all the usual details, while you see them with internet connection, then you know that extra data is being downloaded.

Google is probably trying to satisfy larger group of users, that are into social networks. The recent updates for 3D buildings, offline caching, and actual traffic info - they all are useful things for certain group of users. Continuous updates and improvements - that's what we all should appreciate.
