Google messages doesn't always refresh till close reopen app

I will read a text some times then go to another app and then go back to Google message tone it still looks unread

Have to close and open app to refresh the app

Is this a bug
Free ringtone

Does this happen to anyone else

not on my z fold 3......what phone do you have? have you tried other messaging apps?
