Google Navigation Dies

Newbie
Although this may end up being related to hardware, I'll start here since it seems to be an application issue.

In general, I am pleased with Google Maps and the Navigation components. GPS locks on to satellites almost instantly, search usually works well, and routes are reasonable. However, I've noticed that on trips that last longer than an hour or so, the Maps application (and navigation) dies and I am returned to the "home" screen.

At first I thought it was due to heat (summer, sun, battery, etc.) but it happened recently at night in winter. Then I thought it might be because I was charging it at the same time. Therefore, I tried it on battery alone; same result.

Phone is Galaxy S3, running stock, non-rooted.

Anyone else have this problem? Or ideas? Thanks!

I've had that problem with Google Navigation. And I've had the same problem with Waze. I've also had both of them crash my phone after a while, especially if I'm using the phone for other stuff like streaming Pandora to my car stereo via Bluetooth. I always assumed that such problems were at least partly a result of my phone (an Optimus S) being relatively underpowered and short on RAM.

I also suggest uninstalling and reinstalling the udpates. You probably cannot normally uninstall Maps entirely on an Android phone, so doing just the updates is as close as you can get (for most people).

I personally haven't had an issue with Maps on my new phone, but I don't use it as my primary GPS app anymore. I last tried it a few months ago for a 45-minute drive and had no issues.

Thanks for the comments. I will try uninstalling and reinstalling the updates, but it may be a while before another "long" trip.

In the meantime, I've installed a couple of competing apps and tried them on short trips. I've noticed that my phone does not run as warm with the one I am using now as opposed to Google maps.

OP, if you're otherwise satisfied with the alternate app, running cooler is reason alone for you to consider switching.
