Google Navigation dynamic routing

That was a change with the new version.

I just updated it and it still does not show the ETA on the wide angle view.

What I'm saying is that the updated version of Maps doesn't show ETA on wide angle, while the old did. That was a change.

Google considers a downgrade an improvement somehow, apparently because their developers don't own cars and don't use GPS devices in real life.

I had Google Navigation re-route me yesterday. I was going north on I-405 and there was a blocking accident apparently caused by a DUI in the middle of the day!

Anyway, I learned about the blocking accident from warning signs over the freeway, and shortly thereafter it rerouted me. Unfortunately it doesn't notify you of the change in route. That's bad for two reason: (1) I keep the GPS muted, so but for the freeway signs I might not have noticed I had to get off the freeway about 10 miles early; and (2) From experience with the Dash Express GPS I can assure you that you probably do not want to re-reroute every time a GPS tells you to re-route.

To make matters worse, since Navigation now prefers to keep you in a close up map view (due to the ETA issue above), you might not even notice that it is repeatedly re-routing you in ways that don't make a lot of sense.

Even when I zoom out a bit, the map doesn't move when I drive. I have to zoom back in before the orientation shows the direction I am driving. Maps is forcing me to use the auto zoom feature. Maps just gets worse and worse. The satellite view looks cool, but is not useful when I cannot view traffic in all routes ahead of me and I cannot use it without setting a destination. It seems like they are trying to go the way of Apple maps. Make it look cool, but not make it useful.

Hmm, thats strange, I was able to zoom out a decent bit before mine wouldn't move with the arrow and/or show the ETA at the bottom.

You have to do the route preview which zooms out all the way, and then it will move as you drive.

Satellite view and traffic never worked well together, and I would guess it also sucks data.

It actually doesn't use a lot of data, or as much data as I would of thought that GPS uses.

I haven't really compared data usage between GPS apps but Google's really doesn't use that much.

The app itself doesn't use that much data. I was addressing the satellite images. Because you can't see traffic well with that turned on I've never used it for an extended period, but I can't see how it wouldn't require a fair amount of data to download those detailed images over a wide area.

Regardless of whether or not I use the satellite view, I have a hard time viewing traffic that is not on the route I am on. With satellite view turned off, it is very hard to see the traffic on streets that are not on the route I am on. I can see it, but it is very dim. I want to be able to see the traffic in the navigation view as well as on the overhead view.

Which version of Maps are you using (old or new)? The new is slightly better at seeing traffic off your route, but harder to see the traffic on your route when navigating.

I'm struggling to find any traffic info these days - zoom in/zoom out, whatever :(

Maybe I just got too used to the way maps used to work, but I'm really struggling with the new, re-styled version - just doesn't seem to do the job so well for me.
