Google Navigation, problem installing

spinsheet

Newbie
I have a G1 that I just did a hard reset on. Before doing so I had Google Navigation on it, now that I've reset it I can't figure out how to reinstall it. According to this site Google Navigation should be bundled with the newest version of Google Maps. I have Google Maps Version 3.1.2 (#3188), is this the most recent version? If not, how do I get the most recent version?

I've looked in the Android Market and do not see Google Maps or anything called Google Navigation in there. I cannot for the life of me remember how I installed it last time. Please help, I really rely on that application.

Thanks

That's what I thought, but if I go to the Android Market I simply do not see Google Maps. I went to this site and scanned the barcode and that took me to m.google.com where there was a link 'Download from Market', I click on that and nothing ever happens.

I know that the version of Google Maps that I have on my phone is not the version that I had before the reset, there are little differences, but I can't figure out how to get the most recent version (that I used to have) on the phone. I do not see it in the Android Market anywhere

@drdoom

I didn't even know that that site existed. I logged in but I get a notice that the application is not comparable with my device; but I had the application, or at least some version of Google Maps with Navigation, on my G1 before I did the reset. In fact, that site even states that the app is already installed.

Thanks for the suggestion though :)

It might already be installed on your phone as a stock app. Did you check your app drawer?

Edited: I just checked the market as well and didn't see it. But I do have it under the My Download tab. Maybe they removed it from the market temporarly.

Google Maps is actually installed but it is not the same version as what I had before the hard reset, this one is version 3.1.2(#3188). I notice slight differences in this one and the previous one. When I go to manage the apps I see no option to uninstall it (not that this is really what I want to do).

The icon for this version of Google Maps is different from what I had before and the icon for the one on the Android Market site actually matches what I previously had (plus it is stating that I have in already installed which makes sense because I did previously install it) but it now says that it is incompatible with my phone. Strange.

I have the most current version which is 5.7.0 (#5713). Can't explain why you are having the problem. You might have to visit your carriers store and ask them.

I have a question about Android Market, I just did another hard reset on my phone and all the apps that I had on it before the hard reset are still showing, according to Android Market, that they are still on my phone. So now when I try to redownload them from Android Market I cannot, it says that I already have it.

Is the Android Market 'smart' enough to know that I reset my phone and that those apps are no longer there?

Although it says installed, you can click it again and it will let you re-download them. Same thing happens to me when I switch ROMs. If you want, I can make a backup of my Google Maps and give you the .apk (installer) for it. You would have to temporarily allow non market sources for it to work.

I have an Atrix. From my experiance of doing hard resets, the market will have all my down loaded apps, before the reset, the first time the market is opened. At that time, it will allow you to re download all those apps, without having to search for them.

If you could give me the installer for Google Maps that would be great. I have no idea how to install something like that. Could you give me some instruction? I really appreciate you doing this. I can't understand why I suddenly cannot get Maps installed when I did it on this same phone before the reset.

Thanks for all of your help.

Using your phone, click the link at the end of this post. It will download the install file to your phone. Starting at your home screen, press menu>Applications> check "Unknown sources." It will display a warning saying your phone could be at risk... click through it, and you are done with that. Since I don't know what browser you are using, you will either have to locate the apk file by yourself (it should be in the download folder on your SD card) or your browser will let you install it after it finished downloading. If you have to do the former, I recommend using Astro to find it. After that, it will install just like a normal app. You can uncheck unknown sources after that.

It took me a couple of tries to to get this to install on my phone, but here is the link: http://db.tt/WIlxrco
Good luck.

Thanks, unfortunately it said that 'Maps could not be installed on this phone'. I have no idea what the problem is. Like I said, I had it before I did the hard reset.

Let's back up then. Provide details on how you performed a "hard reset". Perhaps you inadvertently made some other changes that make your device no longer compatible with newer versions of Maps.

I followed these instructions:

  1. Power off the G1
  2. Hold Home Key + End key for 20 seconds or until you see a "triangle with an exclamation point and a picture of the G1"
  3. Open the QWERTY keyboard and hit Alt+W
  4. Restored!
According to my phone I am on:
Kernel version 2.6.29-00479-g3c7df37
android-build@apa26 #19
Build number DMD64
Firmware version 1.6

Thanks
