Google navigation voice stops working

Hi all.

I have been using Google maps navigation for a few weeks on my samsung s4 mini.

I search the location and turn on gps and wireless like it tells me to. After some time the voice navigation stops directing me, the app is still running showing the route but looking at a screen while driving is dangerous.

If I quit google maps and restart it works again but that's not convenient.

How do I fix this or is a better app available?
Does wifi really have to be on for the sat nav to work?
