It's free on any Android phone, since it uses GPS, which has nothing to do with your carrier. If you use it to look things up (like pizza to find the nearest pizza place) it uses data and if your plan charges you for data you have to pay for that. (Also, looking up a destination, if you want driving instructions, uses data, so do that on wifi before you leave home.)
