Google Not selling phones anymore

The iPhone didn't have any bloatware nor did it ever wait for updates.

So you really believe ATT will do the same for say, the Nexus 2? I'm on ATT, and I get great coverage and have no bone to pick with them but, IMO, they will never allow the kind of exceptions they allow for the iPhone.

I don't even think ATT will sell the N1 while in bed with Apple, regardless.

Plus, the iPhone gets what, one update a year?? How the hell does that compare to the Nexus which is getting ready to get it's second update in five months? ATT will never allow updates to flow to the N1 quickly. They only ever updated my Bold 9000 once!!! And they never updated my BB Pearl!

If all of us had bought the N1 through ATT, we would NOT be getting 2.2 when it's released like we are currently. Sorry man, I don't want to go back to watching updates get released but I cannot have them because of my carrier. That is what I fear is going to happen.

Who's to say there will be a Nexus 2 to root at this point??? Rooting the N1 does nothing to ensure a future for those of us who want the Google experience beyond the N1.

I am not saying that I don't like what google did, I enjoyed buying my phone off contract, if something comes out better in a year then I am free to upgrade, and I like the idea of not running with a 2 year contract. I just don't think the average person is ready to buy a phone outright without ever seeing it. When I tell people what I spent on this phone, whether they use a normal phone or if they are a smartphone user, they all give me that wow face. If anything google should at least get this phone into a store, like best buy, so people can get face time with it.

But like I said there is no guarantee of root nor is there any guarantee of a new Nexus2 to root. So, there is no guarantee of updates from Google.

I had that guarantee(on ATT), until today.

What is most upsetting to me is that Google's way of doing things is SOOO much BETTER for consumers! You can lead a horse to water but you cannot make them drink.

Google watching everyone trip all over themselves to sign a two year contract to get the Incredible rather than buy a Nexus off contract could not have been heartening for them. Truth is Google is ahead of their time, and the sheep have their heads down grazing on the same old grass.

My choices are not looking as bright post Nexus One:

Switch to Tmobile: bad coverage where I live, not an option

Switch to Verizon: no timely updates, more expensive, no voice/data at same time, no Nexus

Switch to Sprint: no timely updates, no 4G where I live, no Nexus

Stay at ATT and baby my two Nexus Ones and make them last until ATT finally gets a nice Android device: pretty much my only option right now. Even this option sucks because now I'll be at the mercy of ATT again regarding updates unless root can be achieved on whatever device I'm wanting. Google made rooting the N1 easy. That won't happen again either if its tied to a carrier such as ATT.

Hopefully this explains my disappointment better. it's going to be hard for someone like me who came to Android by going around my carrier. Android not tied to a carrier is all I've ever known.

I think you may be overly optimistic.

IMO, the only retail stores that will be carrying the Nexus One is T-mobile stores.

I hope you're right and I'm wrong.

One more thought from me, then it's time to think about upcoming Google IO:

The one thing Google did to piss me off was not running ONE DAMN television ad for the Nexus. NOT ONE DAMN AD. During the freaking Super Bowl they run a Google search ad! Right in the middle of the Nexus launch!

WTF kind of sense did that make?? One Nexus ad during the SB could have changed EVERYTHING.

the Tmo version that you buy for $170 under contract is the exact phone that we bought (AT&T version or Tmo without contract). If you wanted the Nexus, you had to order from Google, who shipped it, thus Tmo didn't touch the Nexus before it reached the end user (notice my use of pastense XD).

Wow. Google is throwing in the towel after little more than three and a half months on the Web store idea for Android handsets.

Correction: 4 months and 10 days >_>; Damn...if you are going to report on something...do it correctly...it makes me question his research skills (to call it journalism is a big instult to jounalists). I have some critism for what he wrote:

Tmobile has a deal with Google where you can buy the Nexus one for $170 on a 2 years contract. Now, Google just announced that it is working with partners to offer Nexus One to consumers through existing retail channels. Now, my question is, why wouldn't Tmobile not stock the N1 in its store? We haven't heard anything from T-Mo or AT&T but we can't 100% rule out that they won't carry it. I'm not sure with AT&T, but with T-Mo, from a business standpoint it makes sense that T-Mo carry the Nexus. There are people that would consider buying the N1 but are more old fashion and need to examine it before they buy it. If T-Mo carries the phone in the store, people will see the phone, find that they like it, sign the 2 years contract thus leading to increase in customer base which results in an increase in sales. All in all, I see it as a win win for T-Mo. And this end my rant...I just hate when I read articles that have very bad/no busness analysis.

While i agree with you that tmobile should carry the nexus in store, there is the possibility that they wont. For some time now stores the best example being Best Buy Mobile have offered a variety of unlocked phones with tmobile contracts. It would make sense for it to be in the tmobile retail store but its also nice to walk into a best buy or radio shack and be able to pick up the phone as well, especially when best buy is able to give instant rebates vs corprote stores that do mail in rebates

As far as im aware regardless of if it was purchased on contract or unlocked they are all running the unlocked firmware. And i think google is smart enough to realize that carrier firmwares would slow down updates so im sure that any future nexus would be carrier firmware/bloatware free. Lets also not forget that when updates do become available their is always the option of manually loading the update thru an sd card. If it plays out the way i think, we should see another nexus type model in the 3rd quarter of this year maybe 4th.

While i agree with you that tmobile should carry the nexus in store, there is the possibility that they wont. From how I see it, there are only two options for Tmo: 1)Google decides not to use Tmo to carry the N1 or 2)Tmo rejects to carry the N1 at its retail stores.

My argument:
1)To me this wouldn't make sense unless something is wrong with the partnership between the two companies after the release of the N1. Tmobile was the FIRST carrier to carry the Nexus one and has a 2 years plan set up (unlike AT&T). So if you look at how the partnership is set up, now that Google has decided not to sell its phone online; from a business perspective, Tmobile would be the first comany that Google would go to to ask them to carry the N1.
2)If they did, I'd question how the Executives at Tmo do business. To give up sales/profitability is ridiculous for any business. To not carry a produt that their competitor (AT&T) will (ok, this is just an assumption), would leave them at a disadvantage.

Conclusion:
From how I see it, Tmobile has more to lose then not if they don't carry the N1

I think tethering should be FREE...it's YOUR data that you paid for, you should be able to use all of it the way you see fit! It's not like you're NOT paying for the data, if that was the case, then THEY (carriers) can put down rules how they see fit. Charging to tether is just a big rip off!!! THEY just walk all over us (the populace) unless we all band together and make them change their ways

One good thing about Rogers (Canadian carrier), is that tethering is free if you have more than 1GB of data...it's just we get HAMMERED with our data plans :<
