google play app background data spike while idle

Maaaan... The Google Play app just screwed me. It moved about 3+ GBs of background data while the phone sat idle and plugged in this afternoon, and now I'm throttled for the holidays.

Everything was fine for months.

First bad android experience.

Was it updating apps? If so you could uncheck auto update on your apps pages to stop it using data like this then update them manually when connected to WiFi.

Sorry, meant to say that it was the google play "music" app. I can tell from the usage logs that its definitely the culprit.

Do you know how it happened?

Do you do anything other than play locally stored music on that?

Might be good to know...just in case anything like this happens to anyone else...like me :afraid:

Still no clue how. I'm hoping someone here has an idea. I've also contacted the google play music app team.

I don't store any music locally, which seems to make this even weirder since I assume that would be the only time to do anything in the background.

I took a closer look at the logs. Turns out, it was closer to 4 gigs throughout the day. A couple of days worth of music? Insane.

I'm wondering if, in the Settings, it would be better to un-check "Automatically cache" and select "Stream via Wi-Fi only"?

Those are definitely good safeguards against this.

I think caching just stores songs as they're streamed so they can be listened to again without using more bandwidth. In theory, that's awesome.

I've had cache enabled and have been allowing non-wifi all along and it's never been an issue.

I've been trying to recreate the problem today. So far, nothing.

Could it have been part of the Mayan doomsday :D
