Hi. Should have stated that. Sorry. Yep purchased through the Play store.
What version of Android have you got and what make and model is your device. It could be incomplete font support in it by the manufacturer.

sometimes a phone lacks proper unicode support. there are books in my Kindle library that put 'amp' in place of the '&' symbol. a bit annoying but not confined strictly to Google Play.
What's the book?
It kind of sounds like it may have had errors when it was encoded to a digital format. I tried to read a book this weekend that had all sorts of conversion errors - missing quotation marks and apostrophes, missing spaces between words, etc. I eventually had to resort to downloading it from another location, and managed to find a copy that wasn't corrupted.
