Help Google Play Music stops playing to Chromecast when LG Volt is asleep?

Plat

Lurker
Has anyone else run into this issue, or do you have any ideas how to work around it?

Symptoms: I use the LG Volt (Virgin Mobile) phone to play music on my Chromecast using Google Play Music. This works fine when the screen is on, but when the screen is off, the next song does not start. (The current song ends, but no new song starts.) I haven't had this problem on my LG Optimus F3 nor my Transformer tablet.

Music plays fine without Chromecast (e.g., I can use headphones with the screen off, no problem). Chromecast plays fine when triggered from other Android devices.

Songs continue to play if I also run the BubbleUPnP app in the background, but I'm not sure why (maybe it keeps the phone awake?), or how to 'measure' possible reasons. Eventually when BubbleUPnP terminates, Chromecast stops advancing to the next song.

Things I tried to no avail:
  1. Disabling "Connections Optimizer"
  2. Making sure "Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep" is set to "Always"
  3. Unchecking the "Battery saving for Wi-Fi" checkbox
  4. Viewing WIFI connection status through my router - the phone appears to retain a signal even when the screen is off.
  5. Uninstalling the "Task Manager" app that came with the phone
  6. Flipping from Dalvik to ART (ok, I'll try almost anything at this point :))

Thanks; I appreciate any suggestions you have!

Mini-update 2015-01-10: It hasn't been perfect, but I've noticed that my app doesn't get killed as much when it's in the foreground. So if I want to use Google Play Music, that means I have to leave it in the foreground (even with the screen off). It also means I don't really get to enjoy my phone when I want to listen to music on Chromecast, but it's something.

Maybe try a new player? I use my phone to serve my music collection over uPnP and it has no problem taking request and sending it over wifi while the phone is dormant.

I have experienced this before with Play Music, but not seen it as of late. I can say that your list sure covers the things I have tried before. I have seen issues like this that make me think there is something wrong with the phone when the screen goes off. It stops wanting to do anything it would do fine with the screen on. I wonder if there is some weird power saving setting built in somewhere.

Somewhat related, I've been having issues with YouTube disconnecting from Chromecast when the screen shuts off. Doesn't happen with Netflix though.

Just curious: does this happen even when you keep the YouTube app in the foreground? (I.e., the YouTube app is displayed until you shut off the screen; you don't go somewhere else like the Home screen before shutting the screen off.)

Yes. Even if the media widget is active on the lockscreen.
