Google Play Services data removed, Gmail won't update, why?

Hello,

I have an old phone, and because I keep getting error messages that I have to little free storage on the phone memory, I went to "Settings" > "Apps" > "Installed Apps" > "All apps" and then clicked Google Play Services and remove data (there was some 10 MB).

After I've done that, the Gmail app that comes with the phone won't update. I no longer get notices when new mail comes, and when I am in the Gmail app clicking update, nothing happens. New emails are not downloaded.

Anyone know what's going on, and more important how to fix it?

Maybe you need to sign back into Google play. There is a tricky way to do that...I forget how. Maybe go in and out of Google play. Turn off phone then back on. Go in and out of play a few times ?

Got internet? Go to the Gmail website on your device and sign in.

You can set up a POP3 or IMAP with Gmail if you still have the basic mail that came with your phone.
